Calamateur is Andrew Howie, who lives in an abandoned portastudio
on the muddy banks of the Beauly Firth in the north of Scotland.
He makes up songs using pieces of drift wood and the corpses of
dead birds. Strange men steal them away in the night while he's
digging for scallops or sleeping on the old couch behind the eight
track. In the morning he has no songs and has to start all over
again. Sometimes he dreams that he's actually married, living in
a nice two storey flat over a mini market and has turned the spare
bedroom into a high-tech recording studio. Since it rains a lot
in Beauly and the roof of the portastudio leaks, he usual wakens
from these dreams to find his face is wet and the song stealers
have left the door open again.
These four tracks are all alternative versions of songs from Calamateur's
album, 'The Old Fox of 45'. Although the album was only released
last year, some of the songs had been recorded as early as 2001
so Andrew wanted to rerecord a few of them in completely different
ways to see how they would sound now. So, 'Half Truth' has changed
from the loudest song he has ever recorded to one of the quietest,
'Won't Last Forever' has turned country (well...kind of) and 'Here
Beside' is now just a total racket - but then, maybe you thought
that before. The new version of 'Desperate Days' is for Mark (Andrew's
friend), who hopefully approves.
Most of the session was recorded, mixed and mastered on the 19th,
21st and 22nd May 2005 at Fertility Doll Studios, although the skeleton
of 'Here Beside (Fried Fernando mix)' had been lying around for
a while.
